Minamihama area was severely damaged by the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, and the quiet residential area was reduced to piles of rubble.
In that time, Kenichi Kurosawa, who lives in this area, put up a signboard “Ganbaro ISHINOMAKI” on the site of his home. Although he was a victim of his own personal disasters, he wanted to encourage the evacuees.
This signboard encouraged local residents and began to act as a slogan of reconstruction. In addition, as the reconstruction progressed, many people came to visit as a memorial place, for example, people put their hands together and offer flowers.
Currently, the signboard has been moved to a base of citizens’ activities and is displayed as a symbol of reconstruction and civic activities.
