Pond, Former Wetlands
Minamihama area is a place where the groundwater level is high due to the accumulation of sandy soil from the former Kitakami River was piled up. Since ancient times, there have been many wetlands. Until the Land Readjustment Project was implemented in the 1960s, the south side of Shoninbori (Canal) (on the seaside) was sparsely populated with houses.
After that, urbanization progressed during the high economic growth period, and the city’s core facilities such as the Ishinomaki Cultural Center and Ishinomaki Municipal Hospital were constructed, improving the living environment. However, the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 caused enormous damage. With the land subsidence caused by the earthquake, wetlands appeared and the scenery before urbanization appeared.
Zenkaidaike (Pond, Former Wetlands) is a space that conveys the history of the land where many lives were lost due to the Great East Japan Earthquake. It reminds the former wetlands when the reconstruction prayer park was constructed.
